Evie Weinstein
Evie Weinstein has spent most of her professional life in Jewish Education and Jewish Communal work. Her career started in Jewish camping as the Assistant Director of Camp Lakeland and directing the Children’s and Youth Departments at the JCC of Greater Buffalo.
Evie eventually became the Executive Director of the Bureau of Jewish Education of Buffalo and the Principal of the High School of Jewish Studies.
Evie is an active volunteer of the Buffalo Jewish community. She has been married 50 years to her husband, Barry, and is the proud mother of two sons and grandmother to 4 beautiful grandchildren. In her professional capacity, Evie’s most cherished moments was working with teens and young adults in an informal Jewish Educational setting.
Summary of Presentation
The presentation is the story Rudy and Hilde Miller, both born in Germany in the early 1900’s. Hilde Miller, born in Siegburg, Germany in 1913, was able to leave Germany on a domestic visa but her parents were not and perished. It explores her heroic efforts to save the Torahs from her burning synagogue and how she was able to make a life with her husband, Rudy after the war in the United States. We will explore the life she lived as a teen during the rise of the Nazi party and how she was able to get other young Jewish adults out with the help of the family who sheltered her in England. The presentation uses photographs, documents, and artifacts to examine the lives both Rudy and Hilde Miller had before Hitler came to power, how they were able to survive and the amazing legacy they were able to leave behind.
