Belonging Conference

Gather, Grow, Learn and Build

Jewish Buffalo looks vastly different today than it did fifty years ago; different still than it did even ten years ago. Many of these differences can be visibly seen and felt in the size of our population and the shape of our institutions. What’s harder to see clearly is the shifting landscape of the individuals with whom we build and create Jewish life.  What does this changing environment mean for our communal institutions – for the Jewish Buffalo we hope to sustain or ultimately create together? How can we ensure that our spaces of gathering and the things we do within them reflect these differences? How do we develop empathy for those we do not know or understand? How do we embrace and celebrate diverse Jewish identities? What does it mean to belong? How does the rallying cry “nothing about us without us” inform how we plan for the future?

Workshops

Innovation vs Preservation: Belonging and Judaism

Rabbi Sara Rich & Dr. Mike Steklof

Since ancient times, there has existed a tension between innovation and preservation within Judaism. How do you determine what needs to be preserved for all time and what can undergo innovation to reflect modern times? Through this workshop, we will explore Jewish texts as we determine together when we must create space for all to belong and when we must preserve tradition even if it means that we may leave some people out. Designed for folks with experience studying Jewish texts.

Understanding Disabilities

Dr. Andrew Marcum, Samuel Mattle & Michelle Lawson

What does it mean to live with disabilities in our ableist society? How can we create welcoming spaces in our communities for individuals with disabilities? Join Dr. Andrew Marcum, Samuel Mattle and Michelle Lawson to explore these questions and more.

Challenges and Strategies: Gender Diversity and Jewish Belonging

Rabbi Nikki DeBlosi, Ph.D. & El Bernatovicz

Looking for strategies to ensure belonging for everyone on the gender spectrum? Wondering how to make your institution welcoming for nonbinary and trans folks? Agender User Experience Designer El Bernatovicz and queer activist Rabbi Nikki DeBlosi share personal examples and best practices. Bring your questions about rituals, events, or moments in Jewish life that you’d like to workshop with us.

Welcoming Dos and Don’ts

Aster Hathaway & Rabbi Alex Lazarus-Klein

Have you ever felt left out? Ever wondered how to feel like part of the group? Wondering how welcoming you really are? Explore these questions and learn how to make your spaces more welcoming with Rabbi Alex Lazarus-Klein and Aster Hathaway.

Allyship: Creating A Beloved Community

Corey Auerbach, Sam White & Rachel Beerman

Through texts, conversation and reflection, we will explore our shared vision for a beloved community, a phrase popularized by Martin Luther King Jr. in his work towards achieving racial and social justice in America. We will think critically about how we can use allyship to help us create a beloved community here in Buffalo, and set aside time to think about our personal commitment to allyship and how to maintain that commitment to help us work together to create a beloved community.
