Yad B’Yad, Temple Beth Tzedek Kesher Inclusion and the Jewish Community Inclusion Task Force are pleased to present a Jewish Community Inclusion Mini-Series on Vision Impairments (Thursday, October 18) and Hearing Impairments (Tuesday, October 23) 6:30-8 PM at the Weinberg Campus, Meadows, 2650 North Forest Road, Getzville 14068 (second floor lounge).
This two-part series will educate with experts on vision and hearing medical conditions and community resources with words of Torah and insights from area rabbis. Each program will conclude with a Q & A session and discussion with vital input from the audience to identify proactive steps Jewish community organizations should take to remove vision and hearing barriers to inclusion.
The vision impairments panel will feature Rabbi Samuel Barth (Temple Beth Tzedek), Dr. Philip Niles (ophthalmologist, vitreo-retinal specialist) and Dr. James Simmons (low vision rehabilitation optometrist, Olmsted Center for Sight). The hearing impairments panel will feature Rabbi Alex Lazarus-Klein (Congregation Shir Shalom), Dr. Joel Bernstein (ENT-otolaryngologist) and Andrea K. Russell (Care Coordinator, Deaf Access Services).
The series will take place at the Weinberg Campus to help facilitate attendance by residents who may be experiencing diminishing vision and hearing and may have difficulty traveling. Our goal is for the Jewish community to come to Weinberg. We will try to arrange transportation and sign language services for community members requested by October 4. We will be asking all Jewish organizations to join in sponsorship, send representatives and encourage participation.
Informed by the series we will then work to develop effective approaches for individual accommodation requests and proactive Jewish community accessibility steps. Possible steps include training, continuing education, accessible transportation, materials and communications and publication of Jewish organization inclusion resources. We look forward to learning from our community members, experts, leaders and volunteers on the best approaches for a fully inclusive vibrant Jewish community.
