EMANCIPATION, INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION AND THE JEWS – Jewish History in the 19th Century

The 19th century was one of the most eventful and complex in Jewish history. While the previous centuries’ dynamics of persecution, pogroms, and poverty continued, new opportunities and challenges arose. The Industrial Revolution brought with it the promise of emancipation but also the threat of assimilation. Scientific thinking brought rationalism to the public arena but at the same time planted the seeds for a new form of antisemitism that would ultimately lead to horrors of the 20th century. Change was afoot within the Jewish community, too. In response to the era’s threat of assimilation, the Hasklalah movement (Jewish enlightenment) emerged. At about the same time, the Mussar movement (Jewish ethics) arose and itself began to grow. In the meantime, the Chassidic movement continued to develop and grow.
Come join us to explore an historical period whose influences can be felt directly in our lives today.

Class takes places at the NEW JDC Learning Center – 831 Maple Rd #110 (Rear building – use the driveway at ECVA Eye Care Associates to reach the facility)
