Exploring American Jewish Culture in Superheroes and Graphic Novels
January 19, 2020 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Besides being superheroes, what do Superman, Batman, the X-Men, Spiderman, and other popular superheroes have in common? They show traits of Jewish identity and were created by American Jews whose Jewish backgrounds shaped the graphic novel industry from its inception in the thirties until the present. This workshop led by artist Cathy Miller, will point out some of the Jewish themes and characteristics evident in specific superheroes and graphic novels. Participants will be tasked in creating their own superheroes and graphic novel storyboards, “drawing” from their own experiences, cultures, surrounding environments and imagination.
Free event recommended for ages 8-13. Registration required 204-2084.
